China threatens rival spec to dodge DVD royalties
"...Under public pressure to pay what
they consider excessive royalties on DVD products, manufacturers in
China are threatening to roll out their own specification for
DVD-like disks and players for the Chinese market. The spec for
China's so-called Advanced Video Disk (AVD) technology, which
foreign companies would be required to license for products they
sell in China, could be published this year if DVD royalty issues
are not settled. But industry sources outside mainland China said
AVD may be a ploy to gain leverage in negotiations over DVD
royalties.
Chinese manufacturers raised the topic of the new
AVD standard after members of the DVD Forum said at the 2001
International Consumer Electronics Show earlier this week that they
are stepping up efforts to get DVD system manufacturers to pay
intellectual-property royalties, which can amount to as much as 10
percent of DVD hardware's total cost.
"The unilateral high
royalties will be very harmful for the global industry and
customers. It sets up a terrible barrier to further negotiation and
cooperation," said Jin Zhenglong, secretary general of China Audio
Industry Association (CAIA), which represents about 90 DVD and video
CD player manufacturers in China. "It probably will drive Chinese
manufacturers to give up on the DVD format. It also means foreign
companies [will] need to pay high royalties for adoption of China's
homegrown format in this growing market."
But Lu Shuh-tai,
director of the Optical Electronics and Systems Laboratory in
Taiwan, said he believes the Chinese government "wants to negotiate
with the DVD Forum to see if it can get greater benefits from the
royalties." The proposed AVD spec could be used "as leverage," Lu
said..." |

Oak Technology enables LG Electronics to produce 12x writing
CD-RW drive
"...Oak Technology announced that LG
Electronics is in volume production of a CD-RW drive integrating
Oak's leading OTI-9795 CD-RW controller and OTI-9071 Analog Front
End. The LGE drive uses Oak's OTI-9795 and OTI-9071 devices to
create a new high-performance, cost-effective drive with 12x write
and 32x read capabilities. Based on a CD burn time of 80 minutes for
a 1x drive, this latest LGE CD-RW drive with a write speed of 12x
could burn a CD in about seven minutes.
The Oak OTI-9795
controller's maximum 16x write/40x read capability builds on the
strengths of its predecessor, the OTI-9790 8x write/32x read
controller, adding substantial improvements in performance and
functionality to fulfill the demands driving the market. Coupled
with Oak's OTI-9071 analog front-end processor, the OTI-9795
provides one of the most complete and highest performance solution
for CD-RW drives. A hardware and firmware reference design creates
the industry's most fully integrated, flexible and cost-effective
system solution to improve the OEM's
time-to-market..." |

Convert Ricoh 7063x0 to 7083x!
It's time for another hardware
overclocking. We don't advise you to try it until we are sure it
works perfectly. The Ricoh 7063 supports 6X writing, 4X re-writing
and 32X. The Ricoh 7083x support 8x writing, 8x re-writing and 32x
reading. Stay tuned for more news:
Here is what has been
posted in our Forum: "...You have to use rmorph. Put rmorph and
a 7063 bios in the same directory. Now rename a 7083 bios file to
the same name as the 7063. Press next in rmorph. It will say that it
is ready to upgrade the bios. It has allready done the drive check
and it is ok!!
So just overwrite the 7063 bios with the 7083
(make sure it has the same name) and it will proceed with the
flash!!! I did it in my drive and it works!! I tried writing a cd-r
in 8x and it is allright. Unfortunately I only get the option to
write to cd-rw to 4x but I think it has to do with my rw discs beign
rated only up to 4x. I would like to hear from you , if it works on
cdrw 8x..." |
Prassi vs. Adaptec war continues
"...Adapte and Roxio today announced
that the United States District Court for the Northern District of
California has again awarded monetary sanctions against Prassi
Software USA Inc. ("Prassi") in the ongoing lawsuit between Adaptec
and Prassi concerning Prassi's copyright infringement, trade secret
misappropriation and breaches of contract. This, most recent, award
of monetary sanctions follows the United States District Court's
Order finding Prassi in contempt of court for violations of the
preliminary injunction and awarding the amount of $160,000 to
Adaptec, Inc. for such violations.
The most recent sanctions
award arises from Prassi's violations of prior discovery orders and
what the court characterized as "obstructive conduct". On this
occasion, Magistrate Judge Edward A. Infante awarded Adaptec
$33,896.31 as monetary sanctions "to deter defendants from such
obstructive conduct in the future."
In response to this
sanctions award, Dana Miles, the Vice President and General Counsel
of Adaptec stated, "This latest award, just like the earlier
determination that the defendants were in contempt of the
preliminary injunction, confirms both the court's and Adaptec's
intention to require compliance with the law and to seek all
appropriate remedies for Prassi's misconduct. Adaptec will continue
to vigorously protect its intellectual property and to seek all
appropriate remedies from Prassi for that conduct." Adaptec's action
against Prassi Software USA Inc. and its principals is pending in
the United States District Court for the Northern District of
California before District Judge Jeremy Fogel. No trial date has
been set..." |

Interesting news about Plextor based recorders...
Here we go today with several
interesting news about Plextor based (12/10/32) CDR-W
drives:
1) Enable SubChannel Data reading in
PLEXTOR/CREATIVE/TDK/IOMEGA 12/10/32 CDR-W drives:
If you
facing problems when try to read SubChannel Data with your Plextor
based recorder there might be a solution for you. All the above
drives have 2 jumpers next to the digital audio out. If you jumper
them then you drive would recognized as UDMA33 and probably it
will start reading SubChannel data. We tried it in our TDK
CyClone 121032, which refused previously to read SubChannel data,
and worked fine with latest CloneCD (2.8.4.2).
This is the
official Plextor answer about jumper the drive: "...The "Reserved
jumper" (2 horizontal pins next to the digital audio out) is used
for testing during production. If these jumper pins are shortened,
some PC motherboard will work at Ultra DMA-33. But we do not
guarantee the working..."
So if you face SubChannel problems
please try the above trick and report back results.
2)
Rename your IOMEGA/TDK/.. 121032 CDR-W drive to Plextor
one:
Our good friends over Round
Sparrow have released interesting info about converting the ID
of your Plextor based recorder to "Plextor". Why you would like to
do that?
As the people over Round Sparrow say: "...if you
have to ask, then you likely should not. Only people who have
incompatible burning software programs should even consider it! 98%
of users do NOT need to do this. Experienced computer "hackers" are
the ones this information is intended for -- now new computer users.
The Iomega CD recorder works fine for 98% of applications without
the name being changed..." |

and will be priced at $99. If you are a Toast 4 Deluxe user, you can
upgrade to Toast 5 Titanium for only $59..." |
